Donna Mejia at Plaza de Anaya for our Fall Plaza Intensive 2014 Check out these workshops folks! plaza-studio/workshops/donna-mejia-fall-intensive September 20th, Saturday 10am-12pm Beyond Stationary Practice: Transnational Fusion in Full-Blown Motion This workshop re-visions the practice of fixed feet and unmoving isolations to an exploration of dynamic traveling progressions. Donna Mejia will present a stimulating class involving strong cardio/pulmonary engagement, firestorm drills, short moving combinations across the floor, and bi-directional/asymmetrical use of the limbs. This workshop may be best suited for dancers with at least 2 consistent years of experience in Near Eastern dance. However, adjustments and accommodations will be plentiful for participants with less experience. Athletic attire will work best, and optional footwear (flat dance shoes) and knee pads may be helpful for those with sensitive joints and feet. 1pm-3pm Movement Workshop: Le Funk Arabi Each year, many brilliant compositions from artists in Near Eastern and North African countries remix our own American hip hop traditions to new heights and possibilities. In this workshop Donna Mejia highlights the emerging movement aesthetics of this dynamic dialog. After a vigorous warm up and substantial stretching, dancers will receive a variety of stationary and moving progressions that punctuate the percussiveness in music driven by beats. Dance/athletic shoes, a long sleeve shirt and knee pads may be helpful for floor work segments. Donna’s musical playlist includes some of the best Arabic/International funk, hip hop, hard core, mashup, and electronica in the universe! September 21st, Sunday 11am -2pm Full Masterclass with Donna Mejia (Part 1) Warm up and Alignment Refinement: Cultivating Longevity (all levels) Warm up should do more than increase circulation and soften muscles. An effective warm-up has the power to prime the nervous system for quantum leaps forward in training, attune muscular intelligence, reveal unconscious default movement habits and expand the range of motion in joints. Donna Mejia’s workshop details the logic and unfolding of an effective warm up well beyond the basics of token stretches and mild cardio training. Donna will address optimal alignment, joint pliability, breathing techniques, categories of muscular engagement, and safety zones for working sensibly. The information presented can be customized for many levels of ability and experience, including rehabilitation and recovery phases. Participants will benefit most if they can bring the following supplies: a yoga mat, a tennis ball, an old belt, and a notebook/pen. (Part 2) Adventures in The Unfamiliar For those unafraid of new possibilities in human expression, this workshop celebrates our privilege to zoom in and out of various dance genres to excavate and detail the most efficient tools for unleashing the intelligence of the body in dance. Fascinated by her own multi-heritage background, Donna studied ballet, yoga, contemporary modern, break dance, Pilates, acrobalance, West African, East African, Mexican Folklorico, Flamenco, Brazilian, Caribbean, Arab/North African, Indian bhangra, and European folk traditions in her 30 plus years of dance studies (plus some). By studying the signature values of many classical traditions, she has galvanized a personal movement style that defies categorization. You are hereby invited to join Donna on her investigations into unfamiliar movements and extraordinary prospects in art-making. A fantastic and adventurous sense of humor is required! Special requests from class participants will be welcomed. Athletic/dance attire and bare feet will work best. Knee pads may be helpful on occasion. youtu.be/OTs_jU3RuDI
