Have to share this with my friends. Tonight is my normal gaming night at Fantasy Books and Games in Fairview Heights ILL. Tonight was our WWI tactical air combat campaign game using the Blue Max/Canvas Eagles WW I air combat system. Terry Callahan restarted the campaign as we have had a number of gamers move on and are lost to the area so we generated our new pilots and started a new chapter in the campaign. One steady player. Paul Young brought his six year old son, Matthew, to the game. We included him in the restart. Paul actually plotted his sons aircraft orders but Matthew got to roll any combat dice that needed to be rolled. Historically, new young gamers cause a huge amount of havoc when they are included in the games and tonight was no exception. I played on the German side tonight and all of my wingmen agreed with me that we would not target Matthew for a cheap kill as he was flying for the RAF tonight. I tried to keep this promise but Matthew aggressively flew right into the front of my guns and we exchanged the first fire of the game. I hit Matthew for some wing hits and he did the same to me. No critical damage was done and we whizzed by each other and got lost into the furball of the subsequent dogfight. On turn 15, a combination of factors let to two RAF fighters and one German fighter ending up in the same hex and same altitude. All of the players involved successfully rolled to avoid colliding with anyone else. I could see the developing clusterf*^k and turned away from the hex where the unintended meeting occurred. On turn 16, Matthew leaped from the pile of aircraft and latched onto my tail putting a medium MG burst into my fuselage. I was setting up to perform an Immelmann reversal which will spin my aircraft 180 degrees around and be facing the dogged Matthew. I figured dad would see this coming and avoid another face to face combat but Matthew did not flinch and we ended up one hex away facing each other. Both of us fired our maximum burst length from our MGs and I sawed off Matthews tail and shot him down. Matthew managed to survive the subsequent crash of his aircraft and evaded through our lines to return to base uninjured. I, on the other hand, took a long burst into my wings and fuselage which the aircraft readily absorbed but one bullet had my name written on it; killing me instantly and downing my aircraft. You should have seen the smile on Matthews face when he found out that he had shot me down!!! SOOO another tale of new young players playing a wargame for the first time and getting the best of the experienced players. New rule for me...DO NOT FIGHT THE NEWBIES IN A WARGAME...EVER!!!!!
