Have you been to the Big Red Store in Appleton? Special thanks to Steven Boyd for sharing these photos from the historic photo collection of the Big Red Store. This collection is only a small sampling of the local historic photos and relics inside. According to an article written by Bobby Alford in The Heritage of Lawrence County, Tennessee, the Big Red Store first opened for business on July 15, 1902. It was built by Hall, Kelton, and Company, and was originally one of the largest general stores in the South, selling a variety of home necessities and odds and ends, including groceries, hens, stoves, buggies, kerosene, hardware, and even caskets. Although the store originally closed for business in the 1950s, it has since been meticulously restored and rescued from decay by Bob and Linda Boyd, who live near the store. The Boyds and their business partners have restocked some of the shelves and breathed new life into the building. Its massive floor space now serves as a community gathering place and a museum of some of the historic items that were once available for purchase at the store. In 2010, the Big Red Store was featured on the PBS show Tennessee Crossroads. To see the Tennessee Crossroads segment about the Big Red Store, follow this link: https://youtube/watch?v=t8csA8uvfUk
