Have you ever asked for something then, didnt want it when you got - TopicsExpress

Have you ever asked for something then, didnt want it when you got it because, it didn’t turn out to be what you expected? Maybe it was in a restaurant where you saw rows of deserts that looked good but, once it was on your plate it wasnt so great! There may have been clothes you wanted, only to find it that once you had them they werent all that. I know many who fall for the TV advertisements for the “greatest item” on the market, only to spend their money on something that didn’t live up to their claims or expectations. Some things you were just dying to have can cause you more problems than they are worth. There are many who have actually received what they asked God for only to discover that it would have been better if they did not receive it in the first place. I heard Perry Stone once preached a message called, be careful what you ask for, you just might get it! Many have found that to be true because they have received a few things in answer to their prayers, but did not want them after they received them. In every home there are probably Christmas toys, that havent been touched in a long time. Yet, when we prayed for them we thought our kids just had to have them! Country music singer Travis Tritt has a song called, Where corn dont grow. Its about a 17 years old boy, sitting on the front porch with his dad, drinking a cup of coffee, looking out over all the fields, the fields of corn, that surround their farm. The boy says, Dad, I may be kind of young and maybe theres a lot I dont know, but dont you dream of going somewhere where corn dont grow? In other words, dont you get tired of corn, planting it, cultivating it, fertilizing it, and harvesting it, living around it, looking at it?” Dont you dream of going somewhere where corn dont grow? The question makes his dad kind of sad. He says, Youre young, and theres a lot that you dont know, but weeds are high where corn dont grow. In the song the son goes to the big city, goes where corn dont grow, and discovers that big city life isnt so grand because weeds are high where corn dont grow. There is a message in the bible that is very similar to that song. The prodigal son, want all of his inheritance and desired to leave his home for the city life, only to find himself wanting to eat the slop the pigs were being fed. When we ask God for something, we must be ready to receive what He gives us. Something I read years ago goes like this: I asked for strength, God gave me difficulties to make me strong. I asked for wisdom and God gave me problems to solve. I asked for riches and God gave me plenty of work to do I asked for courage and God gave dangers to overcome. I asked for love and God gave me troubled people to help I asked for favors and God gave me opportunities. I asked for power, that I might have the praise of others I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God. I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life I was given life, that I might enjoy all things. I received nothing I wanted, but everything I needed. As Christians, we know that God has promised to hear our prayers. We also know that when He answers, He will do in such a way that will be in our best interest. I have learned that instead of asking for what I want that it is better to ask for what He wants and know that Ill want what He gives. Today, ask God to give you what He wants you to have. Think about what you ask for from not only God but others. Do you want your spouse to be the ultimate spouse? Or, do you want them to love, learn and grow from your life experiences together, thus making you both the ultimate spouse to one another. Do you want your pastor to automatically be the ultimate pastor, or do you ask your pastor how you can help to make the church an ultimate church to win the lost? President John F. Kennedy said it so very well in a speech to this country, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what YOU can do for your country!” The same concept applies to our spiritual lives too. Ask what YOU can do for God not what God can do for you. He is not a spare tire or a crutch to use only when you need Him. He will be there mind you but He wants you to WANT to serve Him in all aspects of your life.
