Have you ever been betrayed? I’m sure that if youve felt the sting of betrayal it probably hurt the most when done by family or even a spouse. Betrayal robs the individual of their sense of safety and trust and for many people it hurts worse than physical pain. It is very hard to extend trust to your family much less “regular people” once youve been betrayed. Betrayal destroys the foundation of trust. What happens after betrayal is usually akin to a cancer that metastasizes. Betrayal produces retaliation usually in the form of more betrayal and many times because the betrayer is a follower of God it causes the victims or recipients to in turn blame and betray God themselves either by their actions or because of their pain. Jesus tells us that before he returns “many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another”. Before the cross Jesus was betrayed by not one but two of his disciples. The word betray and all its variations is only mentioned twice in the Old Testament in contrast to its abundance in the New Testament. The betrayal of Joseph by his brothers has the blueprint for everything you would need in an individual to blame the God that allowed that betrayal to happen. But Joseph never blames God and you would be hard-pressed to find the place where he blames his brothers. How does this happen? How does a spoiled snitch who doesnt know how to take a hint become a benevolent, perseverant, patient, faithful, trusting, honest son and follower of the most high?
