Have you ever ordered any goods from America and then been stung - TopicsExpress

Have you ever ordered any goods from America and then been stung with undisclosed import tax from the courier, Fed Ex? What actually happens is that there is no free trade between U.K and the U.S. and so any recipient on the other side of the Atlantic from where goods are despatched are liable to importation taxes, these however are often not highlighted or disclosed by a vendor. To make tax collection easier in this country, (and to spare delays in delivery of goods), Fed Ex pay the import tax on your behalf, then they claim the money back from you plus adding an administration charge. However, unless you expressly agree to enter into this arrangement (and it can be in the small print of the purchase contract with an overseas vendor) you are not obliged to pay the demand from Fed Ex as you have no contract with them. When this is the case, the exporter is contracted by the terms and conditions of the courier company to pay these fees to Fed Ex if you refuse. This will not prevent their debt recovery agents attempting to con you though. Know the law and use it to your advantage. The admin charge referred to is wholly unenforceable where you have no contract with Fed Ex, and this is a pure scam which nets them extra profit.
