Have you ever sat in the stands at Richmond International Raceway or watched a NASCAR race on TV and wondered what it feels like to drive on the track? Well, starting at noon this Sunday, Oct. 12, you can get the experience you’ve been looking for, with all of the benefits going to a couple of great causes! For $20, participants 18 and older can drive their car or motorcycle for five laps on RIR’s unique ¾-mile track, as they follow the pace car and get a feel for the banks and turns. Pre-registrations are encouraged online at rir/specialolympics until 3 p.m. today. Drive-up registration begins at noon. There is no additional cost or age requirement for passengers. All proceeds raised will go to RIR CARES, which benefits various local charities, and the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics. Officers from local agencies will be volunteering at the event. “Bring the minivan or the Harley, and help us support our community,” said Capt. Harvey Powers, the Richmond Police Department’s coordinator of efforts to support the Special Olympics. If inclement weather affects the event, a note will be posted on the Facebook pages of both the Richmond Police Department and the Richmond International Raceway on Sunday morning.
