Have you ever seen a 3-wheeled BMW? About the same time that Ford was selling the Edsel, BMW was producing a small (a VERY small) 3-wheeled commuter car called the Isetta. The front door was the FRONT door, and the steering wheel folded out of the way so you could get in and out. It was revived, in a strange sort of a way, by the TV show, "Family Matters," when the character Steve Urkel was seen driving it.
