Have you ever sighted a whale, a dolphin or a penguin and wondered - TopicsExpress

Have you ever sighted a whale, a dolphin or a penguin and wondered if your sighting of that species could be important to scientists or wildlife managers? Now you can contributed by recording all your marine sightings via this new App, called Coastal Walkabout: coastalwalkabout.org/wordpress/ Coastal Walkabout is an open access, dynamic, citizen science initiative which utilises freely available smart phone technology (apps) and social media to engage and motivate local communities to gather scientific observations within the coastal, estuarine and near-shore environments. The approach seeks to integrate structured and unstructured survey data to leverage citizen, community, government and science engagement. The project is enabling data transfer amongst organisations regionally, nationally and internationally. It was launched in December 2013, and so far there have been already 3000 sightings uploaded from Australia. If you are interested, just download the app and start contributing your marine wildlife sightings. Or start your own local project!
