Have you ever thought about the stereotypes that some ads might promote? May be not very directly but in a very subtle way, at a subconscious level. Without even you realising it and you form an opinion which may further become your belief and influence your actions. How often do you try to decode any media message that comes to you? Or you are happy and satisfied being a passive consumer? Have you ever tried critically analysing any media production and tried asking simple questions like Who is the message meant for?, Is it based on any facts?, and many such simple questions. We just did this...got some 40 odd teenagers together and helped them realise how important it is to question. How important it is to ask right questions at the right time and not just accept what media tries to portray. This 2 day workshop over a weekend titled as Critical Media Literacy facilitated by Mansi Panjwani organised by Seeds of Peace India, proved to be an eyeopening experience for many of the participants. So, what are you going to do when you see an advertisement/media production next time? Simply, passively, receive it or ask critical questions?
