Have you ever walked from a brightly lit room to one with no lights on in the middle of the night? Where the darkness is so pure and immediate it seems to swallow you? And you cant see an inch in front of your face and you feel like every step you take could be a cliff falling off into oblivion? If you stay still long enough, slowly you begin to regain more and more detail until eventually it doesnt feel so dark anymore. Suddenly you can see. All you needed was time to adjust, adapt, dilate. Maybe theres a way to apply that idea to metaphorical darkness in our lives. Maybe when we walk into dark rooms, lost in the black velvet abyss of fear and mystery, all we need is time. Maybe our eyes will blink and flicker and then well be able to find a way out, or at least feel comfortable there for a little while. Maybe someone else will stumble in and hit the switch and everything will shine. Instantly well be blinded again by the inverse contrast, the flooding in of light. Once again we cant see, but its for the opposite reason. Everything is too bright. Quickly our eyes will regain their balance and the world will come back into focus, and we will have been temporarily blinded on both sides.
