Have you ever wanted to volunteer overseas or work in international development? Join us on February 6 when Dimity Fifer, CEO of Australian Volunteers International, speaks at Dyason House on Working Abroad: Challenges and Opportunities. This event begins at 6pm on Thursday, February 6 at Dyason House, 124 Jolimont Rd East Melbourne. Details can be found here: aiia.asn.au/vic-home/event/864-working-abroad-challenges-and-opportunities About the event: Working abroad has plenty of challenges beyond the normal - adjusting to a different culture, working in different languages or accents, missing family and friends – all of which add to the experience. It also has plenty of opportunities beyond the normal – learning about cultures and countries, travel, and making new contacts and friends. Opportunities to work abroad are numerous and diverse. In the field of development assistance, Australian Volunteers International (AVI), and its predecessor the Overseas Service Bureau, have been placing Australian volunteers in overseas postings for over 50 years. Thousands of young (and older) professionals have applied their skills in diverse roles in a wide variety of countries. Many would say that they personally benefited as much, if not more than, those with whom they were working. To share with us the myriad possibilities of working in development assistance, we are delighted to welcome Ms Dimity Fifer, Chief Executive Officer of AVI for over 10 years. AVI is the leading volunteer placement agency in Australia, and is committed to people centred development, human rights, volunteering, global citizenship and poverty reduction. Ms Fifer is a leading advocate for volunteering abroad within the development sector and an adviser on volunteering to the Australian government. As part of this leadership role she has developed some principles which should guide the behaviour of those working abroad, and she will share those principles with her AIIAV audience. Before joining AVI, Ms Fifer was Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Council of Social Service from 1997 to 2002, a member of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation from 1997 to 2000, and Local Government Commissioner for the City of Whitehorse from 1994 to 1997. She is currently Chair of a not-for-profit youth development organisation in Papua New Guinea, a member of the Executive Committee of the Australian Council for International Development, and founder and convenor of the Women in Development professional network. She has been a member of the Advisory Committee for the Masters in International Development at Deakin University, and a member of the Board of the Monash Institute for the Study of Global Movements. Ms Fifer has a Masters in Integrative and Transformative Studies from OASES Graduate School, and a Doctor of Letters from Macquarie University for leadership in social justice, people and community development. She is also a graduate of each of the Prince of Wales Cambridge University Business Environment Program and the Stanford University Executive Global Fellows Program for Non-profit Leaders.
