Have you ever wondered, Whats the difference between the Food - TopicsExpress

Have you ever wondered, Whats the difference between the Food Basket and the Food Bank? or Why does it matter where my donations go? The easiest way to distinguish between the two organizations is by using their full names: The Mountain Home Food Basket, and the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas. The Mountain Home Food Basket serves clients who live in Mountain Home and a limited geographical area outside city limits but still in Baxter County. (Certain Baxter County residents, like those who live in Gassville & Cotter, or near Norfork or Henderson, are expected to patronize their local food assistance agencies.) In contrast, the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas is a regional distribution hub for food assistance agencies in a 9-county area. The Food Bank does not give food directly to clients, but rather to an agency that serves those clients in or near the town where they live. Among other things, the Food Banks services include distributing USDA commodities, surplus foods donated in large quantities by large corporations, and foods donated by local producers; it also acts as a reduced-cost grocery store for agencies like the Mountain Home Food Basket. Donations to BOTH organizations are tax-deductible and help to feed hundreds of hungry families every month. HOWEVER, donations made to the Mountain Home Food Basket stay right here in Baxter County. Donations made to the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas are used wherever needed in 8 other counties besides our own. We are not suggesting for one second that you stop supporting the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas, as they are a crucial component of the food assistance pyramid in this area -- only that you understand the fine points between the two, and are confident that your donation dollars will reach your intended beneficiaries: Mountain Home Food Basket = local; Food Bank of North Central Arkansas = regional. Thank you for your support!
