Have you ever wondered what exactly we are talking about in our discussions when we mention cold air/high pressure wedging down the Appalachians?? Map #1 shows how low-level cool, moist air from the Atlantic moves west, hits the Appalachians, then drains south all the way to Alabama/Georgia. For WNC, this often leads to clouds, drizzle, fog, and cooler temps (like today). Map #2 shows an example from last month with cool air wedged down the east side of the Apps and milder air on the west side of the mountains.
