Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a judge at International? What do judges do while they sit there waiting for the next competitor? What do they do when you see them go backstage? What do they talk about when you see them conferring? What does it sound like in the pit? Maybe you have no desire to know any of this but you want the best seat in the house and have a little extra cash you’re willing to part with for a good cause? Do we have a deal for you!!!!!!! At the 2010 International Convention in Philadelphia, Society President Bill Biffle announced at the convention we was auctioning off his front row seat for the Quartet Finals to raise money for Harmony Foundation. He marketed it as “the best seat in the house”. I was judging at that contest. I looked down at the end of my judging table and thought, “heck, there’s enough space at the end of this table and it’s even a better seat than Bill’s! How much could we get for that one?” Later in the year I raised the idea to SCJC (Society Contest and Judging Committee) and after some discussion it was approved to officially sanction “auctioning” off a seat in the pit for each session to raise monies for Harmony Foundation. We have done this for the last two years in Kansas City and Portland with moderate success, but I’m confident we can do better. Unlike the last two years, we now have an online auction process so this can be done ahead of the convention. The opening bid starts at $100 for a seat and the minimum increase is $10 (but I would challenge you to make it higher!). You can bid at any time but the bidding closes on June 19!!!! So if you win “the best seat in the house”, what exactly does that get you? · The seat will be at the same tables as where the 15 scoring judges will be sitting · You will receive a badge with your name as a keepsake · You will be given the opportunity to score the quartets in your chosen category. You will be given the same scoring sheets that a judge receives. You can take any notes you want or just sit and enjoy and write down a score at the end. Your scores will not count in the official contest, but your scores will be entered into the scoring program. A few days after the convention, you will receive a graphical analysis of how you scored in your chosen category for that session. · You are invited in the Judges’ Green Room to partake of beverages and snacks alongside the judges · You are encouraged to ask as many questions with the judges about the experience There are seven different sessions you can bid on. 1. College Quartet 2. Quartet Quarterfinals #1 3. Quartet Quarterfinals #2 4. Quartet Semifinals 5. Chorus Finals #1 6. Chorus Finals #2 7. Quartet Finals You can go to the following website, register, and bid on any or all sessions you desire. bsith.harmonize If you aren’t interested but know someone who is attending who might be, please pass this on. It’s open for anyone, member or non-member, male or female. It’s a great opportunity that only a few people get to experience. You win and Harmony Foundation wins. See you in the pit!
