Have you ever wondered why...? Why do doom and gloom predictions for the future inevitably outnumber visions of social freedom, fairness, and the concept of a bevy of intelligent and benevolent machines helping humanity? In just one example, consider how mainstream entertainment drives the focus for future technology into an apocalyptic fight of humanity against machines? Will computers gain sufficient knowledge and ability to enable them to surpass humans, and to eventually seek our downfall? Ponder the issue a little, and its hard to escape the idea that our own humanity will limit the impact of technology far more than any technology is likely to impact us. Perhaps its the perception that humanity has evolved greatly over the past 10,000 years but even that concept doesnt really bear up under close scrutiny. Transfer current technology back 10,000 years and, after the initial magic shock-and-awe-response, humans of the time would very quickly get used to using the technology.
