Have you have seen the excellent modern Blaxploitation and revenge film from Quentin Tarantino’s -- D’Jango Unchained? The film is set in the Antebellum South just before the Civil War, an underlying premise and recurring theme of the movie is Mandingo or Nigger Fighting -- a brutal, inhuman form of blood sport combat that some slave owners forced their male slaves to engage in, for entertainment and betting purposes between competing slavers and other interested white men. If youve wondered how much of that premise of the film is based on actual history, wonder no more: its true, it happened. Courtesy of a New Deal Era program called the Works Progress Administration or WPA (1936-1938), journalists, researchers and historians interviewed former slaves (still alive and in their 90s or early 100,s - do the math, it works out) who witnessed, first-hand, some of this brutality courtesy of those fine Southern gentlemen. Following is a link to a History website with other links to the original WPA documents that document the interviews with and testimony of some former slaves who witnessed Mandingo fights resulting in severe injuries and deaths of the reluctant contestants. THIS, my friends, is a part of U.S. history from not so long ago, and what many southerners and conservatives are STILL stubbornly in denial about. historybanter/did-mandingo-fighting-really-happen/
