Have you heard of The Queens of Africa? Mattels Barbie may want to take notes. Taofick Okoya went into a toy store to buy an educational doll for his niece. What he found was row upon row of expensive, thin, white dolls. After doing some research, Okoya realized there was an untapped market for dolls that represent African women. The Queens of Africa are modeled after Nigerias three largest ethnic groups: Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. Okoya is hoping to eventually expand the line to represent other African groups. You may notice that the dolls are still thin, however. Okoya says that his early templates were larger bodied, and the kids did not like them. He says For now, we have to hide behind the normal doll. Once weve built the brand, we can make dolls with bigger bodies. You can read an updated version of the story here: bit.ly/Ld2wQN Thanks to Bella Naija and The Guardian for sharing!
