Have you read The Hare With the Amber Eyes yet? A wonderful book which charts the history of a family collection of Japanese netsuke through the 19th & 20th centuries. One of the other things to be learned from the book is the tragectory of the fashion for all things Japanese starting in France in the 1870s. And with it came the need to design furniture to display these small treasures in...hence the vitrine comes into its own. Japonisme influenced design through out Europe and can be seen as an aesthetic in many Arts and Crafts objects from this period too. And so...we have a small collection of Edo period Japanese objects to start your own collection!
