Have you seen the Green Sanctuary Garden? The vegetable garden in the northwest corner of the VUU has over 200 feet of garden rows and 4 large raised beds. This week volunteers picked broccoli and cauliflower to donate to the Tempe Community Action Agency. Volunteers help choose what and when to plant, maintain the garden and participate in a community that has fun together while we harvest and learn. We encourage families and children to experience the wonder of growing healthy food! To volunteer please contact Karen S. at [email protected]. This weekend Green Sanctuary will be hosting an Environmental Forum January 25th from noon until 2 pm. Find out about the nutritional value and carbon footprints of the foods you eat. The program will begin with a lunch consisting of various soups and bread with fruit and cheese for $6 per person. After lunch, there will be a short presentation about disinfecting water and making it drinkable using the rays of the sun. Find out how to improve on the “solar water disinfection process, or SODIS, of purifying water by filtering it, especially helpful in disaster relief. Then the film, “Nourish: Food + Community,” hosted and narrated by actress Cameron Diaz, will be shown. The film features interviews with best-selling author Michael Pollan, sustainable food advocate Anna Lappé, chef Bryant Terry, pediatrician Dr. Nadine Burke and organic farmer Nigel Walker and traces our relationship to food from a global to a personal perspective. It shows how food connects to such issues as biodiversity, climate change, public health and social justice.
