Have you seen the latest Common Core meme going around showing the old-fashioned way and the Common Core way? Its incorrect and it is ignorant of what education is, what standards are, what methods mean, and how education really works (or should work). The explanation here is perfectly stated. The comments also clear up some confusion. One may or may not like Common Core; however, this graphic was not Common Core at all. Be informed.
