Have you seen the new pennies? They look impressive, all shiny and new. They even have a new cool “shield” logo on the back. But they are not the same as the old ones. I did some research on the new pennies. With all the recent theft of copper going on I thought why don’t people just buy rolls of pennies and melt them down for the copper. After all pennies are made from copper right? Turns out the new pennies are not copper, but a worthless metal with a thin copper veneer. They are a mere image, a facsimile of a penny. This makes them virtually worthless. They have no intrinsic value. They are only worth 1 cent, because the US mint says they are worth one penny. It got me thinking of how when we as Christians buy into the American dream, what we’re really buying into is just something shiny, with a veneer on the surface, but no real worth underneath. When you dig into the real value, it just isn’t there. The world tells us to go after the shiny, the new, the impressive. Christ calls us to give our one.life to follow after him, to give all we have, to have a complete buy in, to be all in for the Kingdom of God. To give everything we have, everything we are, and risk it all, this one.life for His namesake. And if we will, we will find something that has true and lasting value. We have this one.life. Will we use it bring glory to God, even if it costs us everything?
