Haven 111 Complete Well done to our Dynamic Duo Team leaders Kelly & Sue You and your Team did an amazing job A Beautiful note from TL Kelly About a year ago I stumbled upon Assist A Sistas facebookpage. I was instantly taken with the idea of the Havens and thought to myself: I have to Join this Movement. I happen to work in the Qld Police Service as a Sergeant in Domestic Violence Prevention, a job I have done for 10 years and I desperately needed to lighten my soul. I job share with a lovely lady called Sue, also a Sergeant who has been doing the job for nearly as long as me. Our role is to audit what the first response police do when they go to DVs, network in the community, speak to both respondents and aggrieveds at court, provide advice to aggreiveds during the court/investigative process and to hatch plans and ideas for DV prevention. Together Sue and I decided to do a fundraiser and some shopping centre displays involving Assist A Sista. The shopping centre displays were a hoot, the lovely Nicolle joined us, on the first occasion we were confronted with Firemen selling calendars (not so bad) and the second occasion two first aid emergencies. We were getting the word out about the Assistahood despite these distractions! In August this year I was asked if we would like to Team lead a Haven. I hesitated, but eventually said yes and shared the plan with Sue and enlisted the help of fellow police colleagues The Monday when we got the keys from the Support worker, it didnt seem so bad. Sue and I sat down and had a coffee and worked out what we needed and from whom and divvied out the tasks. We managed to get Carpet One at Stafford to agree to carpeting the bedrooms, however they could not do that until the Friday. We slowly gathered items from near and far and filled up the lounge room, ready to strike on Friday once the carpet was laid. I drove some kilometres that week and I didnt know my Tarago could be that jam-packed full of goodies. We enlisted the help of Sergeant Sharnelle, Volunteers in Policing Suzie and Jo, Senior Constable Shaun, Sergeant Kerry, Sergeant Sean (and his neighbour), my ever faithful boyfriend Jarred and a new Assista Sam also helped out. Shaun can make a mean bed and Sean can lift furniture like it belongs in a barbie doll house. Sue and I kept each other sane, because there were times we wondered how we were ever going to finish and laughed manically together. I was determined to get a free-standing basketball hoop knowing that it was something mentioned to be a favourite sport and Senior Constable Ty from Bray Park PCYC in conjunction with Amart Sports at Lawnton helped us out and even threw (sorry for the pun) in some basketballs. Gosh we met some great people along the way, Shirley (our mentor) was such a great support and kept us entertained too, what a beautiful soul. So, we met our deadline, the Haven was all but ready to go on the Friday, I just encountered some curtain issues on the weekend that nearly made me take up the drink, thank goodness Spotlight was not a far drive away, so I opted to fend off my thirst and head straight to Spotlight to find the perfect curtains there Come the Monday morning we filled the pantry and the fridge with food and handed the keys over to the DV Support worker. What I didnt expect was to cry, I was so overwhelmed with happiness, pride and more that I felt like I had done something new to break the DV cycle. Sue and I both hugged the worker and she too had welled up We Salute you Kelly, Sue and all your amazing colleagues whom we are proud to call Assistas The Qld Police Service are lucky to have you and we are certainly honoured to have your support The Community standing together to Break the Cycle Join the Movement Assistas ❤️Nicolle & Manuela assistasista.au
