Having a couple of hours to myself today, I sat down to lunch at Yours Truly and read Crains Cleveland Business. I read Crains every week because its really the only publication that actually tells me what the hell is going on in the town I call home. And, I especially like the statistical analyses of types of businesses presented almost weekly--this week Crains ranked, by numbers of local attorneys, the largest law firms. Two of the most telling columns within the rankings of law firms is the comparison of the total number of each firms partners versus the number of minority partners. It is shocking to me to find how few minority partners exist --- of 660 partners of the top 10 largest Cleveland law firms, their are a total of 25 minority partners. (There are 135 women which doesnt seem so bad when compared to numbers of minority partners). The largest firm, Jones Day, has 1 (one) local minority partner out of 72! Even with the relatively paltry number of minority law school graduates nationally (see below), a town that so prides itself on diversity must do better. What do yall think? A Columbia University study found that among the 46,500 law school matriculants in the fall of 2008, there were 3,392 African-Americans, or 7.3 percent, and 673 Mexican-Americans, or 1.4 percent. Among the 43,520 matriculants in 1993, there were 3,432 African-Americans, or 7.9 percent, and 710 Mexican-Americans, or 1.6 percent.
