Having a livable wage in America gives other countries an unfair - TopicsExpress

Having a livable wage in America gives other countries an unfair advantage. I have heard this argument before and I have a solution. We say to every corporation in the world: You want to sell your products in America? great but in order to do so you must pay your workers the local equivalent of $17 an hour ( or more in time). Our trading partners with the best stuff Europe, Canada and Japan, will not even notice since their minimum wages are far ahead of $17 an hour anyway. The cheap crap we get from China will end up costing more... but with a higher minimum wage working families will be able to afford it and might even opt for the good stuff from time to time. So.... which multinational corporations will decide not to sell their products in the land of the consumer? I would argue: not a one. This move would raise the standard of living not only in the US but around the world. It would mean that our foreign aid expenditures would go down. Imagine workers in Mexico making a decent living, our borders patrol would not be so busy because fewer folks would need to come here. Many will see this idea as unfriendly to business but if we can foster a middle class in places like Central America, Africa, the middle east and the far East that would me a bigger customer base for American made products. Worth considering......
