Having a nice quiet night at home tonight. We had meatloaf, mashed potatoes and string beans for dinner. Here is some more insight on how the Green Bay Packers lost to the Seattle Seahawks yesterday, looking at 8 plays that doomed Green Bay. The following information is from an article from NFL: There are bad losses. There are sickening losses. And then theres what happened to the Packers on Sunday in Seattle. Had even one of multiple scenarios played out differently, it might have been the Packers representing the NFC in the Super Bowl on Feb. 1. But they didnt, so the Packers wont. Weve put together a group of eight potentially fate-altering plays or sequences in the order in which they occurred. Warning: This is not for the faint of heart. 1) Goal line stalls: The Packers reached the Seahawks 1-yard line in back-to-back possessions in the first quarter and came away with just six points. After John Kuhn had 1-yard touchdown negated by an official review, Eddie Lacy was stuffed on 3rd-and-goal, prompting Mike McCarthy to bring out the field-goal unit. On the next possession, Aaron Rodgers led Jordy Nelson a foot too far on an end zone throw, which was followed by Randall Cobb being tackled at the 1 on third down. McCarthy again sent Mason Crosby onto the field. 2) Rodgers second pick: Green Bay failed in every opportunity to put the game away, and it started right here. The Packers had marched back into Seattle territory with a 16-0 lead midway through the second quarter. On 1st-and-10 from the 33, Rodgers had a miscommunication with either Cobb or Nelson (its difficult to tell on replay) and the quarterbacks pass was picked off by Byron Maxwell. Another missed opportunity. 3) 3rd and 19: The Packers had the Seahawks right where they wanted them. Seattle faced a 3rd-and-19 from midfield, down 16-0 midway through the third quarter. The Packers opted to rush just three, giving Russell 7.7 seconds from the time he took the snap to the moment he released his pass, a 29-yard completion to a wide open Doug Baldwin. Four plays later, Seahawks punter Jon Ryan got Seattle on the board with his fake field goal touchdown pass to Garry Gilliam. 4) Ha Ha cant hold on: Ha Ha Clinton-Dixs day was a microcosm of what happened to his team. The day started out brilliantly for the rookie, with two interceptions. But it turned sour in crunch time, starting with this drop of a Russell Wilson pass with 7:11 to play in the fourth quarter. Said Joe Buck on the Fox telecast: And that could have been number three on the day for Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and that would have ended of the day because he was wide open on his way to the end zone. 5) Burnett goes down: Morgan Burnett appeared to punch Green Bays ticket for Arizona when he corralled a deflected Russell Wilson pass for the Packers fourth interception with five minutes to play. But Burnett had an odd reaction after making the play, choosing to slide to the turf rather than advance the ball into Seahawks territory. The Packers went three-and-out on the ensuing possession, taking just one minute off the game clock. The Seahawks were still alive. 6) Bostick goes down in infamy: Heres the craziest thing about this game: The Packers failed in all the scenarios above and still probably would have won if Brandon Bostick did his job on the fateful onside kick attempt. But Bostick abandoned his blocking assignment and went up for the ball as Jordy Nelson watched helplessly behind him. The ball went through Bosticks hands and conked off his helmet, leading to a Seahawks recovery. Four plays later, they had the lead. I let my team down, I feel like, Bostick said. There was a lot on this game. I just feel like if I was able to do my job -- my assignment was to block -- Jordy wouldve caught the ball and the game wouldve been over. 7) 2-point madness: Now to Clinton-Dixs final fourth-quarter miscue -- and its an all-timer. On the Seahawks 2-point attempt after taking a 20-19 lead with 1:25 play, Wilson took the snap out of the shotgun formation, rolled right, and quickly retreated as Green Bays rush closed in. He drops back 11 yards, in fact, before heaving the ball up for grabs to the opposite side of the field. The balloon sailed toward tight end Luke Willson, who was covered by Clinton-Dix. For reasons that might never be known, the rookie safety fails to make a play on the ball and Willson pulls it in. 8) The cruel end: Even after Crosby tied the game with a 48-yard field goal with seconds to play in regulation, you got the feeling this would end with a final stomach punch to Cheesehead Nation. Wilson and Jermaine Kearse did just that, connecting on a 35-yard touchdown to end the game on the first possession of overtime. Cornerback Tramon Williams got beat in man coverage and had no safety help on the play (a head-scratcher, in retrospect). Wilson made the throw, Kearse made the catch, and one of the most crushing collapses in NFL playoff history was complete. The harsh reality is that the Packers will have to live with and dwell on this crushing loss all offseason and perhaps longer. It stings that the Packers were just 3 minutes from the Super Bowl holding a 12 point lead and they could not hold the lead. Instead the Seattle Seahawks advance to the Super Bowl for the third time in franchise history and for the second consecutive season. Seahawks will be vying to become the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the 2003 & 2004 Patriots. Seahawks are the first defending Super Bowl Champion to return to the Super Bowl the next season since the 2004 Patriots. Seahawks are the first NFC team to go the back-to-back Super Bowls since the 1996 & 1997 Green Bay Packers. Seahawks will be vying to become the first NFC team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the 1992 & 1993 Dallas Cowboys. Seahawks will be facing off against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX. For the second year in a row, the two #1 seeds will be facing off against one another. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will be making NFL history in the Super Bowl, becoming the first quarterback to start six Super Bowls. Tom Brady and the Patriots won their 20th playoff game yesterday which is more than 21 other teams have in their franchise history. Bill Belichick surpassed Cowboys legendary coach Tom Landry winning his 21st playoff game as a head coach, which is the most playoff wins by a head coach. Here is some more insight on the Super Bowl XLIX matchup between the Seahawks and Patriots from an article from Yahoo Sports: So weve got us a decent little Super Bowl matchup — the New England Patriots vs. the Seattle Seahawks — in a battle of the top two seeds in each conference. That leaves us 13 days to break down the matchup ad infinitum and go through all the tangible Xs and Os. (Trust me: Well do it, too.) But lets step back a bit and take a look at the big picture. What are the major storylines heading into Super Bowl XLIX? We came up with the top five: Brady, Belichick go for 4 The New England Patriots return to the scene of the crime — Glendale, Ariz. — where their perfect season was ruined in early 2008. After winning 18 straight games up to Super Bowl XLII, the Patriots fell to the New York Giants in dramatic fashion. That, many Patriots fans felt, was supposed to be their fourth title, but they didnt win that one and havent won one since, despite three championships in a four-year span from 2001-04. Head coach Bill Belichick has won three Super Bowls with the Patriots, two more with the Giants as an assistant coach and will be going for No. 6 overall. Hell be seeking his fourth title with Tom Brady as his quarterback, which would tie the duos of Joe Montana-Bill Walsh and Terry Bradshaw-Chuck Noll. Of course, Bradshaw and Montana never lost a Super Bowl game; Brady has lost two, but he also will become the first QB to start in six Super Bowls. And a Patriots loss would mean Brady has lost three straight Super Bowls, which has been accomplished (is that the right word?) by only three quarterbacks: John Elway, Jim Kelly and Fran Tarkenton. Does Brady need a fourth championship to seal his legacy? Click on the video above for some Shutdown Corner perspective on that. The Pete Carroll Bowl Carroll has had a strange head-coaching existence. He failed after one year as the New York Jets coach in 1994. He returned as a head coach three years later with the Patriots, going from 10-6 to 9-7 to 8-8. That was a tough act to follow, replacing Bill Parcells as coach. The players were surprised by his college-like approach, which paled in comparison to the gruff Parcells, who had earned the veterans begrudging respect. After three years in New England, Carrolls act had run its course. But its clear the man can coach a little football. First, he dominated at USC and then was hired by the Seahawks, going 50-30 in the regular season the past five seasons and doing his best work in the postseason, winning eight of 12 games and going for back-to-back Super Bowls. Is there a revenge factor here? No. Carroll might take slightly more pleasure in beating the Patriots and owner Robert Kraft, the man who fired him, but its clearly not going to be his main motivation or any kind of distraction — even though hell be asked about it all this week and next, especially when the New England media get to him in Glendale. Oh, and what coach did Kraft hire to replace Carroll? That would be Belichick. Decent call there. The last time a coach faced his former team in the Super Bowl? Jon Gruden against the Oakland Raiders, which he won in rousing fashion. Revis vs. Sherman debate Who is the best cornerback in the NFL? Expect a few words on that matter leading up to the Super Bowl. Both Richard Sherman and Darrelle Revis overcame slow starts this season to get back to the All-Pro level for which they are known. Sherman is the younger of the two, and perhaps the most outwardly brash, but he also suffered a left elbow injury — and some reported possible nerve damage — in the game on some friendly fire on a hit from teammate Kam Chancellor in the third quarter on Sunday. Sherman says hell play in two weeks. Which, of course, only adds another layer of intrigue to this fascinating debate. Expect both men, however, to have strong feelings about this discussion. They famously have gone toe-to-toe on Twitter to hash this thing out for the world to see. Both of them made interceptions on Sunday to help their respective teams make a Super Bowl. But they also have connections to the teams they are facing on Super Sunday. Sherman famously got in Bradys face after the Seahawks beat the Patriots in Seattle in 2012, and Sherman commemorated the event with a T-shirt with the caption: U MAD BRO? And the Seahawks reportedly were interested in trading for Revis when he became availble as a member of the New York Jets and then-GM John Idzik (a former Seahawks employee), who instead dealt Revis to Tampa Bay. Old vs. new greatness at quarterback Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss. Tom Brady won two Super Bowls in his first four seasons, and three in five. Russell Wilson is going for his second title in three seasons. They might have totally different styles, different cultural backgrounds, different body shapes and different physical traits. But Brady and Wilson have more in common than you might initially think. Theyre smart, good-looking, Big Ten-bred future politiicians with baseball backgrounds and the knack for delivering clutch performances in big situations. Of course, neither man had his best game Sunday, with Wilson throwing an unsightly four interceptions against the Green Bay Packers and Brady throwing one and playing so-so in the first half against the Indianapolis Colts. Seahawks dynasty? We shall see. Win here and its sealed up. The last back-to-back champs? The Patriots, of course, in the 2003 and 04 seasons. But these days, winning two Super Bowls in any short period of time equates a dynasty. Even though the Patriots dynasty talk didnt start until they won their third title in a four-year period a generation ago. Plus, when you consider just how young the Seahawks are and how much of their roster will still be under contract after this season, its possible — even if they lose this Super Bowl — that they could remain in the dynasty hunt for years to come. Is there a little extra motivation for the Patriots to prevent the Seahawks from gaining that franchise notoriety, seeing as how they were the last team to really achieve that? Perhaps. This game is full of storylines, and we havent even dug into the nitty gritty — or mentioned Gronk! — yet. Lets now take a look at both the Seahawks and Patriots season schedules and see how they each got to this point. The full NFL schedule will not be announced until the spring. The 2015 NFL Season will kick off on Thursday September 10th. The Super Bowl Champion will host the season opener to ring in the new NFL season. So we now know the first game of the 2015 NFL season on September 10 will take place in New England or in Seattle. New England Patriots 2015 Opponents: Home Games: New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins If the Patriots win the Super Bowl, the Patriots would play a home game on September 10th against one of the 8 teams listed above Road Games: New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants Seattle Seahawks 2015 Opponents: Home Games: Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, St. Louis Rams, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers If the Seahawks win the Super Bowl, the Seahawks would play a home game on September 10th against one of the 8 teams listed above. Road Games: Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, St. Louis Rams, Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals Each team plays each of their three division rivals twice a season, once at home and once on the road- 6 games. Each team plays all of the teams from a division in the opposite conference on a four year rotating basis- 4 games Each team plays the other two teams who finished in the same position in their division. This simply means a first place team plays a first team place, a second place team plays a second place team, a third place team plays a third base team and a last place team plays a last place team. Lets now do the 2015 Opponents for all the rest of the playoff teams, starting with the teams who were sent home yesterday, followed by the teams eliminated in the Divisional Playoffs, the teams eliminated in the Wildcard Round and lastly the teams that did not qualify for the postseason.
