Having a problem with your composition? Does your perspective seem just a little off? Does your portrait seem not quite right? Try using a black mirror to help see some of the problems you are having with your painting. A black mirror is a picture frame with glass that has been filled with a sheet of black construction paper. The glass will reflect the light areas of your painting, while the black paper will flatten the shadows. This will reduce your composition to a more graphic image, making it easier to see problems with drawing and value issues. Also it will reverse the image same as a regular mirror will. Seeing a drawing/painting reversed will often times make problem issues easier to see.
