Having been an avid watcher of MTV ever since I first got a satellite box, Winterval (formerly referred to by some as Christmas) is an especially special time for the channel. For twenty years MTV has promoted the best music, and the best humanitarian causes of the age. The Pogues Fairytale of New York will always be my favourite Winterval song. Not just because it is a simply fantastic piece of music, but because it was created by a British band who have done so much to bridge the divide between a battered and indignant England, and an embittered but resurgent Ireland. But watching the MTV Winterval channel this afternoon, it was Wizzards I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday that moved me the most. This wonderful soft-rock childrens classic has come to symbolize all that is good about the season of goodwill. It seems strange now watching the little kids in the classic video, most of whom will be parents and grandparents today. Good music sure is timeless. Throughout the sequence of greatest Christmas songs, featuring everyone from Cliff Richard to East 17, and Frank Sinatra to Boney M, MTV continued its tradition of warm humanist sentiment, by promoting anti-bullying, anti-homophobe, anti-racism and anti-poverty charities... marxist propaganda that makes the BBC look like a conservative Edwardian stuffed-shirt by comparison. Peter Hitchens take note. The media outlets that are independent of government are generally far more leftist than the BBC. Its extraordinary to think that some of the puritanical social conservatives who contribute to Peter Hitchens blog think that the world is a far worse place today than it ever has been before, seemingly *because* popular media outlets like MTV promote tolerance of gays, women, children and non-white people. I would much rather live in todays imperfect world, than the bigoted Edwardian hell socially conservative puritans want to return us to. And then John Lennons Happy Xmas came on to make me think again about The Pogues holding the top-spot in my Winterval heart. A Merry Winterval to one and all. May the spirit of Christmas be with you every day of the year. https://youtube/watch?v=j9jbdgZidu8
