Having completed the Old Testament for the year, today’s traditional Calendar of Readings in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer takes you into the apocryphal Wisdom of Ben Sira, or Ecclesiasticus. This probably made sense when people read their Protestant canon lots, but I have two questions: (a) does it make any sense today?, and (b) is the BCP at this point just incapable of throwing off Roman Catholicism (for which Ben Sira is Scripture) or is it trying to be duly respectful to a very ancient, biblically-informed set of writings? I dunno (though I did do the reading!). Genuinely keen for informed comment.
