Having had time to think about the reviews The Unsung Heroine of the Double Helix, I actually feel quite troubled by the response. I received such criticism as being unfriendly, irritable and unsympathetic. I would question a mind-set that purports the idea that female characters have to be so damned likeable all the time. Should I been modest, delicate and tactful, not daring to make my/her true feelings known? Maybe I would have got more sympathy from the audience, but I would have been more greatly burdened with the knowledge that I was doing to Rosalind Franklin an injustice, containing her strong, fiery and blunt qualities into a narrow ideal of what an audience might find more acceptable in a woman. Maybe Im a terrible actor, and should make a quick, dignified exit off the stage, but I would not want to do so without questioning the reviews offered.
