Having inadvertantly blown a cloud of vapour round the guy who is the boss of the entire facility (actually its the bosses boss but I hadnt any knowledge she had a boss) I got chatting about vaping and he was saying that he is on the board for Sheffield smokefree so he is a bit conflicted about why it should be allowed indoors. Queue the usual we dont know whats in them, half the people on the board are anti them, some of the doctors are pro them, are they not luring children in to smoking, no-one actually knows what advice to give them statements and questions we had a good chat where he asked me directly about things that he was unsure of. Over the course of about 30 minutes he seemed to really warm to the idea of vaping and then something weird happened, he grabbed the Sheffield Smokefree co-ordinator and they asked me if I would get involved to advise the council and board on which direction to accept vaping within employers premises as a way to allow people to use nicotine without smoking. He was genuinely impressed with what I told him and said that at all the meetings where ecigs had been raised there had been questions raised that no-one could give a clear answer on - something that I had answered straight away and that had made sense. It appears that Sheffield council have been wanting to get vaping allowed at workplaces in order to promote smokefree and they have never had anyone from this side of the industry and particularly anyone who seems interested in keeping up to date with the latest research and issues. So yeah, it looks like I am going to be advising Sheffield council on their smokefree policy and also with Public Health Sheffield on vaping in general.
