Having just read this it seems fair to ask whether a portion of Frans salary should be considered an election expense for the National party. Fran is entitled to her opinion and to publish but her arguments such as they are, are facile and clearly indicative that she wrote this nonsense without carrying out any fact checking. Key has been lying in public and to Parliament since the new GCSB law was first mooted in late 2012/early 2013 and he has been forced to admit as much. Fran is clearly one of those lazy journalists who anticipated the Moment of Truth to deliver her a ready made rebuttal of the Key government position. If she really expected that she is way past her sell by date. The suggestion that businesses need assistance for encryption from government security services is as wrong as it is fanciful. Encryption services to industry is a readily available commodity and not part of the security services function. The relevance of terrorism threats in NZ are minimal and the public who understand the probability theory of applied statistics will know there is a far greater chance of death by shark than by a terrorist. Using her logic shark protection should be a GCSB function too. I could go on and on but her opinion piece today (17th September) is no more than paean of praise for National and devoid of rigour and basic journalistic skill. Just go.
