Having listened to Mahlers reworking of the motif, it was uplifting to listen to Beethovens Ninth last night at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. It reminds me of the greatness of the German people and their resolve in the midst of the post-Napoleonic Europe. Beethoven had nothing left when he wrote this magnificent symphony. His hearing had totally gone. His sanity was slipping away. Still, he insisted on the greatness of God. The massive effect of the chorus assures us of how a great nation can overcome anything. It also reminds us how close good and evil are in the nature of greatness. https://youtube/watch?v=t4N5-OALObk
