Having now had time now to absorb the Brisbane Writers Festival, these are my highlights: Tony Birchs direct insights into the writing industry, masculinity, The Rolling Stones Vs The Beatles and magical foreskin. Simon Armitages poem The Shout which I dreamt about and everything he did & said & even ate, a poetry star humble as night, especially when he got Leslied at his huge UQ lecture. Ben Salter for taking what could have been a dogs breakfast and making it into amber beer poured into our ears, plus he didnt mock Don McLeans Wnterwood and I would love to work with him again. Yrsa Siguroardottir for proving crime writers arent lapsed serial killers. Dave Eggers for being accessible and fidgety and helping dogs talk, he seems the real deal. Hinemoana Baker for being a class act, elegance and beautifully cut words. Pascalle Burton for being the best moderator I saw all w/end, immersive and switched on. Also was great to see Felicity Plunkett, Maxine Beneba Clarke, and Omar Musa - they were a loose London cat, verse of the earth, and shining with integrity & joy (opposite order). And to everyone that came to my reading on Sunday and bought books, much gratitude - left the State Library wet (rain) and quietly satisfied (Mick Jagger was wrong).
