Having recently returned to Pictou, ( the town I grew up in and have always been proud to say I am from) I felt the need to comment on the deterioration that was noted from the sparse, business sector of down Town Pictou to the noted deterioration of the health of family members that are permanent residences of Pictou. Growing up in Pictou the Pulp Mill has always been a fixture across our harbour, we had always had the annoyance of the stench that it produced, but I do not recall the steady roll of fog that now blankets the beautiful waterfront! I clearly remember my Chemistry/Physics teacher in PA, (Mr. Hardy) stating at that time how much of a toxic result the Mill would be to future generations. He noted that most of the paint peeling on homes in Pictou was just a small reminder of what we were possibly breathing in! That was in 1986-88, and now in 2014, the emissions have greatly increased. Pictou looks like a ghost town, with business closing and a practically empty main street. Is it any wonder? With tourism the main resource for this town, I am sure Pictou is not the ideal vacation spot for families. It is certainly not an environment I would want my children to be exposed to! With that being said, it is with a heavy heart that I leave my remaining family behind to live here. My aging relatives all have breathing problems that I am certain are a result of the air they breath everyday! The last thing I would think Pictou County needs is another industry closing, but there has to be some huge deficiencies in the way the Mill is operating. I dont understand how this albatross could be allowed to continue with no regulations.
