Having returned from my week of recitals and master classes in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and the Palestinian territories, I can now tell you where I will be going next, as I said I would do. It is to a completely different part of the world and TROPICAL. I will be leaving Thursday for the Pacific island of Guam, where I will spend a week being part of the Tumon Bay Music Festival---the main one on that island---doing some piano teaching, adjudicating, and playing in the Finale concert on the 15th the Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue with the Festival wind ensemble. Then, I will go to the nearby island of Saipan in the Northern Marianas for the remainder of March for several performances there. I have played on both islands several times, as well as on other islands of Micronesia in the past (Babeldaob in Palau, Pohnpei in the Caroline Islands--part of the Federated States of Miceonesia, plus Kwajalein and Majuro in the Marshall Islands. Also visited the island of Yap once--also in the FSM, like Pohnpei. There are many relics and items from WWII still lying around: i.e. Japanese pillboxes, rusted artillery and tanks, and, on Yap, I saw in the jungle remains of crashed Japanese Zero fighter planes. A most interesting part of the world! So, I will now be AWAY from the polar vortex and ANY other cold weather affecting northeast Ohio and Youngstown! Looking forward---time to pack the bathing suits and shorts, among other things. Will be back April 1st (or, will I--being that is April Fools Day!!). I will be back in time for my daughter Oksanas birthday the following day.
