Having spent 31 years of my life teaching music, mostly in - TopicsExpress

Having spent 31 years of my life teaching music, mostly in elementary school, I have met a lot of children! I cant begin to calculate the number of children because I was a musician, not a mathematician, but its got to be in the thousands.... Anyway, this past week I have run into several former students. From time to time I will see a former student who seems devastated that I do not remember the name... For that, I sincerely apologize, but at the same time, I am somewhat devastated as well. That child remembers my name, but I dont always recall theirs, which, in a way, is a blow to their self-esteem, and, on the other hand, lowers their opinion of me, which hurts me... Growing older is really working me over this week- bad back, quirky memory / forgetfulness, too much to do and not enough time to do it - really frustrating to not be able to handle things like I once did... Most people think of retirement as slowing down.... YOUVE GOT TO BE KIDDING! Im running more now than I ever did... not more stuff, its just because Im older and slower and it takes A LOT LONGER to get the stuff done! Just now I was scanning through an old yearbook from the elementary school where I taught and it brought back such wonderful memories.... some sad, because some of the students in that book have past away already, but mostly great memories..... seeing pictures of little 1st, 2nd, 3rd graders who are now in high school or have graduated and have successful careers going full blast! Seeing those innocent, smiling, sometimes toothless, little faces was the highlight of my day then, and it still is today!
