Having the previous post in mind, Paul said that the only way we can approach God is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. He is reminding the New Testament Jews that to go back to Judaism which was their danger, is to turn their backs to the only hope of salvation. In Hebrews 10:14, we read: “Because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” In Hebrews 10:24 to 29 the writer says, if we turn our backs to the sacrifice of Christ, we have nothing to face but the judgment. “If we deliberately keep on sinning.” Here the writer means that, if we deliberately keep on rejecting Christ after we have received the knowledge of the truth, after we have realized and understood and been convicted of the truth of the gospel, (Verse 26-29), “no sacrifice for sin is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?” These are strong words. The writer of Hebrews is saying, if, under the law, you were punished when two or three witnesses declared you guilty—and you know the law was hard to keep—how much more you deserve to be punished if you deliberately, persistently and ultimately reject a gift. You see, with our sinful natures, it is impossible for us to keep the law and yet we were punished says Paul, if we broke the law of Moses. But for you to reject Christ is inexcusable because it is a gift, a gift that cost you nothing although it was at infinite cost to God to save you. Therefore, may I emphasize that to give up this wonderful gospel, to give up this hope of salvation in Christ, to give up the cross or to reject it is the greatest mistake any human being can make. When Christ comes the second time, He will come, not to deal with the sin problem because He has already dealt with it at His first coming. The salvation Christ has obtained for the human race in His earthly mission was full and complete. We must not turn our backs to this salvation. We must sincerely pray and ask God to give us strength because, as long as we are in Christ, there is no condemnation. (Romans 8:1) You have peace with God through justification by faith.
