Hawai‘i County Civil Defense officials say the #PunaLavaFlow - TopicsExpress

Hawai‘i County Civil Defense officials say the #PunaLavaFlow advanced downslope approximately 15 yards for the first time in four days. The previously stalled leading edge had not been active since Monday, December 22. Officials say the flow front appears to be moving sluggishly and remains narrow at approximately 25 yards wide. USGS geologists with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory say the leading edge is approximately 700 yards from the back of the Pāhoa Marketplace property line and about 0.6 miles upslope of the Highway 130 and Pāhoa Village Road intersection. Hawai‘i County Civil Defense Director Darryl Oliveira says surface breakouts and activity along both margins continues upslope of the flow front, however current activity does not pose an immediate threat to area communities. Officials report smoke and vog conditions were moderate to heavy Saturdag morning with a light variable wind causing the smoke and vog to settle across the entire eastern areas from Puna through Hilo. Officials said smoke and vog conditions may increase in some areas and residents who may be sensitive or have respiratory problems are advised to take precautions and to remain indoors.
