Hawaii Island had a banner year in the rain department after many years of dry conditions. “Rainfall totals for 2014 ended up in the near to above average range at most of the gauges on the Big Island,” wrote National Weather Service hydrologist Kevin Kodama in a December rainfall summary released Friday. The rain gauge at Kawainui Stream at the north end of the island registered the highest annual total, with 222.06 inches of rain, representing 164 percent of the spot’s usual annual rainfall. “Honokaa and Pahala both finished 2014 with their highest annual totals in a data record going back to 1991,” Kodama wrote. “Kahua Ranch, Kamuela and Kamuela Upper had their wettest year since 2004.” All that rain helped to pull Hawaii Island out of drought conditions within which various regions of the island had been mired going back to May 27, 2008, when North and South Kohala rainfall totals put the area under a D1, or “moderately dry,” designation, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
