Haydn was known for his sense of humor. Musically, his wit is apparent in his lighthearted melodies, and, most famously, in the ‘Surprise’ section of the Symphony No. 94. In the second movement, notice the sudden, fortissimo chord at the end of the opening theme. Haydn was said to have written this to wake up the listeners who may have drowsed off during the slow movement!
