Haysed and Confused: Twins Drop Another To The Larks July 19 Game Recap The Twins fell once again to the Hays Larks Saturday night, this time by a final score of 4-1. The offense once again looked feckless in the defeat. It failed to advance a runner to third base until the ninth inning. With the loss, the Twins fell further behind the Larks in the quest for second place in the Jayhawk League. They now sit two-and-a-half games behind Hays with only four games to play in the season. The Derby Boys managed a pair of base runners off Larks starter Nick Goza in the first frame. 2B Juan Rivera led off the game with an opposite-field base hit. After a sac bunt by 3B Jarrod Flax, LF Dylan Dillard drew a walk to put two aboard with only one out. But DH Austin Orth and SS Tanner Kirk both struck out, and the Twins came up dry. Stuart Patke took to the mound to start for and was batted around in the first. He surrendered two runs on three base hits and an error by Tanner Kirk in the inning. The score would remain 2-0 until the fifth, when the Larks capitalized on a leadoff double by RF Evan Gruener to put another tally on the board, bringing him in on a pair of groundouts. The Twins continued to struggle at the plate, managing a lone base hit from the second to the fourth. A one-out single by CF Ty Redington in the fifth was negated by an inning-ending double play on a grounder by Juan Rivera. Goza, who was bashed by the Twins for ten earned runs on June 20, had their number this evening, lasting seven and surrendering only five hits. Patke lasted through the seventh, surrendering back-to-back hits to start off that frame. 3B Derrick Mount singled to start the inning and was brought home by another Gruener double to make it 4-0. Patke was relieved by Sean Laughlin, who surrendered one hit but no runs in the eighth. C Tory Bell helped the team avoid its second shutout of the year by driving in Tanner Kirk with a two-out base hit in the ninth off reliever Ian Bentley. Kirk was the first Twin to reach third in the contest. His run made it 4-1. With two on, Tyler Eager entered the game as a pinch hitter. Eager, representing the tying run, could not play the part of the hero though. He struck out looking to end the game. The loss dropped the Twins to .500 in league play. They have lost three straight and now sit at 15-15 in the Jayhawk, two-and-a-half games behind the Larks. Since July 4, the team has won only two games against Jayhawk opponents. They will get one final crack at the Larks Sunday. The season-finale with Hays begins at 7 pm at Larks Park.
