Hazardous Driving And Walking Conditions Through New Years - TopicsExpress

Hazardous Driving And Walking Conditions Through New Years Good Morning! Snow on top of a coating of ice - travel still discouraged this morning. The Lubbock airport received one-half inch of snow while the National Weather Service (NWS) office at the Science Spectrum received four-tenths of an inch of snow. At 7:00 AM snow was still falling here. Even with very light accumulations of snow or ice, very slick spots are common this morning. Be especially cautious on raised surfaces such as overpasses, bridges, decks, and outside stairs. Drivers should plan on encountering hazardous road conditions this morning. If possible, dont drive. Todays low reported so far at the Lubbock airport is 10 degrees. That is just two degrees above the December 31 record low of 8 degrees. Temperatures are holding steady, in some cases even edging upward, at the moment. Lubbocks record high for the date is 19 degrees. I expect the high to be just a bit above that. This morning occasional very light wintry showers, mainly light snow, will continue - with very light if any additional accumulation. If you are heading to the airport heck with your airline first. A number of departing and arriving flights have been cancelled. It will continue to be very cold, with wind chills from 5 below to 5 above zero in the Lubbock area. This afternoon a few light wintry showers will be possible, and while additional accumulation is not expected, very slick areas are. Otherwise cloudy and very cold with single digit wind chills. A variety of winter weather warnings and advisories are in effect, including a Winter Storm Warning for the southern viewing area, a Wind Chill Advisory for the northern and northwestern viewing area, and a Winter Weather Advisory for nearly the entire viewing area (as well as to the west and east). Tonight areas of freezing fog and occasional very light wintry showers, mostly flurries, are possible. Again, very little accumulation is expected, but icy surfaces are likely. Poor travel conditions should be expected this New Years Eve. New Years Day a few light wintry showers, as well as areas of freezing fog, are possible early. Drivers and walkers should expect areas of ice. The afternoon will be slightly warmer, but cold enough that areas of ice may linger through the day and night. We are watching a weather system that likely will bring more precipitation to the KCBD forecast area late Friday and Friday night. Accumulating snow is possible. These reminders from yesterday bear repeating: This is a developing weather situation. Please keep up with the latest forecasts, watch for updates, and watch for advisories, watches, or warnings which may be issued.
