Hazards of fast food We all have been continually warned about the long term health hazards of frequent fast food consumption. But the craze for these on-the-run foods refuses to fade away. The reason lies with the great taste and low cost as compared to the conventional foods as well as easy access for super busy people. But are these foods really worth the convenience and taste? Actually not, as it all comes with a price tag that costs our health and wellbeing. Obesity, as we know is a well-established and widely known phenomenon associated with excessive consumption of such foods. But there is more to the story. Not only do these foods oversize you, they also are responsible for a number of other health problems that might go unnoticed for years and cause complications later in life. These foods are loaded with calories, sodium, trans fat, refined cereals, and sugars. Excessive consumption of these leads to complications like elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. Obesity in itself causes quite a few hidden problems like sleep apnea, gall bladder stones, infertility, insulin resistance, body pains and many more. Most of these conditions are present even when a person is not too obese but go unnoticed until they become serious enough to alarm us. HOW DO THESE FOODS AFFECT US THE WAY THEY DO? The effects of junk food would be clear if we understand what healthy food does for us. The nutrients present in our food not only nourish us but also enable the organs to perform their intended functions helping us maintain good health. For as long as the food upholds the nutrient intake needed for cellular activity, our metabolic processes function smoothly and keep us healthy. However, in a lack of these essential nutrients or in the presence of inhibitors that stop these nutrients from performing, the metabolic activity begins to decline resulting in various medical conditions. The junk or the fast food that we eat does exactly the same. It not only lacks essential nutrients but also contains harmful substances that inhibit the normal cell activity and send out false signals confusing the metabolism. Prolonged consumption of fast food may lead to: Poor physical or cognitive performance. Altered blood lipid profile. Insulin insensitivity Diabetes Coronary heart diseases Infertility Obesity Low self esteem Therefore, it is evident that one needs to control the fast food intake and adopt healthy eating habits for a healthier tomorrow.
