Hazleton man jailed on federal drug charges A Hazleton man was sentenced Wednesday to serve 46 months in prison on a charge of conspiracy to distribute cocaine. According to U.S. Attorney Peter Smith, Juan Carlos Alvarez, 28, pleaded guilty to the charge in March. U.S. District Judge Robert Mariani also ordered that Alvarez serve an additional three years under court supervision upon his release from prison. Alvarez was charged after an investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration along with police from Hazleton and Butler Township. In September 2013, while incarcerated in federal prison, Alvarez was arrested on drug charges in Northumberland County. At the time, he was labeled by investigators as the alleged ring leader of an international drug-trafficking organization involving heroin and cocaine that stretched from the Dominican Republic to Luzerne and Northumberland counties. According to testimony of two statewide grand juries, Alvarez had been supplying local users and dealers with bulk quantities of heroin and cocaine since at least 2008.
