Hazrat Omar (ra), during his reign as the second Caliph of Islam, - TopicsExpress

Hazrat Omar (ra), during his reign as the second Caliph of Islam, made a proposal of certain regulation concerning the Mohr (gift to women) in marriage. There were many people including the Sahabis (scholars) present during the occasion. A woman rose from behind. “Omar, you can’t do that,” she said. But Omar did not tell her, “Shut up, you are a woman; you have nothing to do in the administration, etc.” rather he asked her, “Why?” The woman made her argument on the basis of the Holy Quran. After she had done, Omar stood up and in presence of everybody said, “The woman is right and Omar is wrong,” and withdrew his proposal. The status of women in Islam should not be judged by observing the conduct of individual Muslims or of any Muslim society towards women. It is not Islam, but the racial and cultural tradition of the particular region which is to blame for the misconduct towards women. In Islam the status of women is celebrated with honor and dignity.
