He Who Wept John 11:35 Jesus wept. Jesus knew Lazaruss condition was only temporary. In fact, he had delayed his arrival in Bethany (Lazaruss hometown) specifically so that he could demonstrate his power over death by raising Lazarus from the grave. He knew that in a short time Lazarus would be back among his friends and family. So why did Jesus weep? Perhaps the best explanation is that he had empathy and compassion for his friends. He hurt because they were hurting. He knew they were aching from grief and sadness, and it moved him to tears.
