He arrived on earth in the lowliest of circumstances. This humble birth conveys an amazing message to creation: The transcendent God came down; down from the heights of absolute being into time and space, down into humanity. But, instead of coming to earth in some high profile manner, as a pampered, privileged, powerful ruler, He was born in meekness, as one of us. He is approachable, accessible, available—no palace gates bar the way to Him; no ring of guards prevents our approach. The King of kings came to us in the most humble and vulnerable manner, and His first bed was a manger... a stable. Not the neat, tidy stable we have come to know through romanticized paintings. A real stable. The house, the prison of the animals who work for man. The poor, old stables of that time were only four rough walls, a dirty pavement, a roof of beams and slate. It is dark, reeking, uncomfortable, and filthy. This is how he came to us. To recapitulate in the womb ancient and pre-human phases of life; down to the very roots and seabed of Nature He has created. But He goes down to come up again and bring the whole ruined world up with Him. Glory to God in the highest.
