In 1838 he ran for speaker and lost, in 1840 he ran for elector and lost, in 1843 he ran for Congress and lost. He tried again in 1846 and won but was defeated in 1848. In 1855 he ran for Senate and lost. In 1856 he ran for vice president and lost. In 1858 he ran again for the Senate and he lost again. But in 1860, only two years later, he ran for and was elected president of the United States. This great man was no quitter, he was Abraham Lincoln.
