He finally shared his struggle with his friend Roy. I quit smoking but I don’t think I can hold out, I just don’t think I have the power to say no any longer. Franklin said, “Why don’t you just get down on your knees and tell God he is a liar?” “What? I can’t do Roy quoted I Corinthians 10:13 – “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man but God is faithful who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able but with the temptation will provide a way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” Then looking at Franklin he said bluntly, “You need to tell God is a liar, you claimed that verse and it didn’t work!” I will not call God a liar, said Franklin alarmed. Besides I haven’t claimed that verse yet! You haven’t said Roy sounding shocked “why don’t you then? Later on Franklin claimed that verse and it did work. How can the Son of the world’s famous evangelist have spiritual problems? Simple! He was born dead in his trespasses and sins (as we all are) and he learned (as we all have) to live his life independent of God. Consequently transfers us out of the kingdom of darkness and in the kingdom of God’s beloved Son (Colossians 1:13) we are no longer Adam, we are in Christ but we have retained many of the old ways of thinking about ourselves. There is no such thing as instant maturity; it will take time to conform to the image of God. Our tattered self image is being renewed as we are being transformed by the renewing of our minds. Success comes by “Can” and failure by “Cannot”. Believing you can take no more effort that believing you cannot so why not believe that you can walk by faith in the power of the Holy Spirit that you can resist the temptations of the world, the flesh and the devil that you can grow as a Christian.
